Introduction of the Course
• In this course the students will be introduced to the basic concepts of Bharatanatyam to provide them with the clear overview of the field that they will be studying in the duration of this program.
• The students who decide to specialize this dance, in this course, will gain an understanding of Indian classical dance forms and also an practical understanding of technical terms of Bharatanatyam in this course.

Recommended Learning :
• Any sloka , Bajans instrumental piece or any other appropriate music for classical dance can be used giving importance to Adavu and Mudras learned so for.
• The basic Bharatanatyam walk which involves lifting the feet while slightly lowering the body, the feet are then placed down heel first and the body is raised backup.

• Nadai ( Meaning gati ) refers to the rhythmic flow of the composition. Carnatic Music upon which Bharatanatyam is based, recognizes 5 basic needs.

Alaripu
In the Repertoire of Bharatanatyam, Alaripu is a opening item which can be performed in any of the pancha jathi tals. Here, the students will be taught the alarippu un thisra jathi.
Jathiswaram
This item has only pure Nritta devoid of abhinaya, this piece opens with the rhythmic mridanga syllables followed by music notations.

Shabdam
Introduction to fully fledged expression with direct and simple ideas with few Nritta passage in between.

Varnam – Poorvangam
Its angas, jathis , swara korvais, direct meaning and elaborate meaning of the lyrics , highlighting the basic rasa, practical application of calculation involved in the tala structure.

Bharadhiyar Song
Bharatanatyam is a 20th century Tamil poet and a rationalist whose literary works repeats Socio- Political issues. His poems and essays upholds artistic and moral integrity. One of his famous song will be taught in class.

Pushpanjali is an offsering of slowers to God. In Sanskrit, pushpam means “Flower “ & Anjali means “ Offerings “. So Pushpanjali means offering of flowers with folded hands.

A Kowthwam presents fascinating scope for study, both historically and technically.

Slokam
